Match preview
In a Premier League record scorer weekend, these two teams have been among the hardest hit last time as Burnley sent four in Leicester and Southampton were 5-2 losers at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
For both, it is a bad start to the campaign in the league, although Burnley had more reason for joy with this defeat also sandwiched by victories over Sheffield United and Millwall in the EFL Cup.
The Clarets reward for it - a 2-0 triumph in the den Wednesday night - could be a fourth-round showdown with holders Manchester City next week, but Sean Dyche will be much more focused on getting the mark in the league right now.
Dating back to last season, Burnley have lost league games back-to-back for the first time since January, having lost only one of their previous 15 top-flight outings before that.
Dyche will be hoping that a return to Turf Moor, where they beat Southampton 3-0 on the opening day of last season, will spark a return to winning ways, but they were beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion in their last game home league.
Southampton arrive at Lancashire with a poor recent record against their hosts, who lost their home and away last season and did not win any of their last seven Premier League matches.
Indeed, we must go back to 1974 for the last top-flight away win at Burnley, although the defeat to Southampton last term in the corresponding device was an exception to a record far otherwise impressive for the Saints throughout from 2019-20.
Ralph Hasenhüttl can remind his side of the turnaround after being beaten at Crystal Palace on the opening day of this season as well, though the Saints need more and more of a first victory when the Austrian boss is to avoid increasing pressure again.
Southampton have lost three of their competitive outings this season and were carved open by Harry Kane and Son Heung-min partnership against Tottenham in their first home game last weekend.
This result was not on an equal footing with 9-0 humiliation they suffered at home to Leicester City last season, but heavy defeats at St Mary are definitely not the way to Southampton to improve to show all of last season, when he was only their away form which saved them a piece of relegation.
One way to do that will improve their ability to hold on tracks; Southampton threw a league high 37 points from winning positions Hasenhüttl took over in December 2018.

The Clarets lost 4-2 on the road the last day of the match against Leicester. The team lost their opening league match, the fact that they lost only four times in their last 20 attempts, is a testament to their consistency.
And it is noteworthy that two of those losses came against the recent Champions EPL - Leicester and Manchester City.
Go, they were also unbeaten in ten of their former twelve appearances at this stage.
On the other hand, their counterparts are on a three defeats race. In fact, they lost their last game 2-5 at home against Tottenham.
